Bears use balanced attack to beat Dartmouth in four sets

HANOVER, N.H. – Brown volleyball used a balanced attack to take down Dartmouth, 3-1 on Friday nigh. The Bears dropped the first set before winning the next three in the win over the Big Green.
Brown (7-6, 3-1 Ivy) had four players reach double-figure kills for the second time in the last four matches. Kayla Griebl led the Bears with 15 kills, one kill shy of her career-high. Both Kate Sheire and Sophia Miller had 14 kills and Beau Vanderlaan had 12.
The Bears hit a blistering .358 on the night with five of the six Bears that finished with a kill, hitting over .361. Gabby Derrick, four kills, hit .667, and Cierra Jenkins hit .538 with seven kills, Vanderlaan (.524), Sheire (.448) and Griebl (.361) rounded out the top hitters for the Bears.
Jenkins guided the offense, handing out 49 assists to go along with her seven kills and added 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Jessie Golden led Brown's backline defense with a career-high 19 digs. Victoria Vo was second on the team with 11 and Miller also added 10 for a double-double. At the net, Vanderlaan was tops on the squad with seven blocks and Griebl added three.
Brown hit .341 in the first set but allowed Dartmouth (10-4, 2-2) to hit .381 as the Big Green scored a 25-21 set win. After the first set, Brown did not allow Dartmouth to hit above .233, and held the Big Green to hitting just .226 for the match.
In the second set, Brown offense lit up, hitting .410, committing just three errors and collecting 19 kills. Tied at nine, a four-point run for Brown put the Bears up 13-9 and forced a timeout. Later in the set, kills by Derrick, Sheire and Vanderlaan forced another timeout and put Brown up 22-15. The Bears finished off the set with kills by Sheire, Vanderlaan and Griebl.
Brown took control of the third set from the start, scoring the first eight points in a run that ended with back-to-back blocks. Vanderlaan teamed with Jenkisn and Griebl in the two blocks. Brown's lead would hit 10 after a kill from Miller and the Bears would hold off any Dartmouth run, never letting the Big Green get any closer than seven. Jenkins finished the set with a kill, giving Brown a 25-16 set win.
Two kills by Derrick set the tone early in the fourth set as Brown jumped ahead 10-5. Kills from Miller and Griebl pushed Brown's lead to 13-6. A 4-0 run that featured two kills by Griebl made the score 17-8 in favor of Brown and all but sealed the match. Up 23-13, Dartmouth scored six-straight points but kills from Miller and Sheire ended the match.

Brown will finish the road trip at Harvard on Saturday with the match against the Crimson beginning at 5 p.m.
