Volleyball comes back to beat Cornell in five sets

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (11-8, 7-3 Ivy) started slow but overcame an 0-2 hole to beat Cornell (4-15, 2-8 Ivy) in five sets on Saturday (Oct. 29).
Brown was led by Sophia Miller with 20 kills. Miller finished the game with a .304 hitting percentage and added 11 digs for a double-double.
Beau Vanderlaan had 10 kills, hitting .500 and added seven blocks and three service aces. Kate Sheire also added 10 kills and finished the match with three blocks. The offense was guided by Ella Park who had 46 assists and four aces.
Brown dropped the first two sets of the match as the offense struggled, committing nine errors and hitting .238 in the first set and .194 in the second. Brown fell 25-16 in the first set and 25-21 in the second to find itself in a 2-0 hole.
The Bears responded in set three, hitting .409 and holding Cornell to a .000 hitting percentage. Brown jumped ahead 10-4 after kills by Kayla Griebl and Kate Sheire and a block by Vanderlaan. After Cornell cut the lead to 14-9, Brown ripped off five-straight points to go up 10. The teams traded the next five points before a 4-0 run that featured a kills by Griebl and Vanderlaan and a block by the duo to win set three 25-12.
It looked as though the match was going to slip away as Cornell took an 11-5 lead and maintained a six-point lead at 18-12 before Brown won seven of the next eight points. Sheire had three kills during the run for the Bears, who tied the set at 19. Cornell responded with two -straight points before Vanderlaan started a run with a block with Sheire and added two kills to give Brown set point. Two points later, another kill from Vanderlaan forced a fifth set.
Brown had already come back from a 2-0 hole earlier this year against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi but the Bears fell behind 4-2 quickly. Brown responded with a 7-0 run to go ahead 9-4 and take control of the set. After a point from Cornell, Brown scored the next six points, featuring three kills by Miller and two aces from Vanderlaan to win the match.
UP NEXT
Brown will hit the road for two matches next weekend as the Bears will travel to Princeton on Friday (Nov. 4) and Penn on Saturday (Nov. 5).
