Volleyball beats Columbia in four sets

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball got back on track with a four-set win over Columbia on Friday (Oct. 28). The Bears hit .346 against the Lions in the win.
Brown was led by Sophia Miller who finished with 21 kills and hit .514. Kate Sheire was second on the team with 16 kills and hit .387. Both Jilienne Widener and Beau Vanderlaan had eight kills. The Bears' offense was guided by Ella Park who finished with 49 assists and had 10 digs for a double-double.
The Bears held Columbia to .220 hitting doing most of the damage at the net against the Lions. Brown finished with 14 blocks and 45 digs. Gabby Derrick finished the game with 10 blocks, including four solo blocks and Park had five. Jessie Golden finished the night with 12 digs to lead Brown.
Brown was down 16-10 at one point in the first set before using a 4-0 run to pull within one at 20-19. Down 23-21, Brown used a 4-0 run, including kills by Vanderlaan and Miller to end the set with a 25-23 win.
The Bears held the lead for most of the second set but Columbia stayed in the set taking a 22-20 lead. A 3-0 run by the Bears, capped by a kill from Sheire put Brown two points away from another set win but the Lions scored the final three points of the set to tie the match.
Miller and Derrick took over set three for the Bears with Miller posting seven kills and Derrick finishing with three kills and six blocks. Back-to-back kills by Miller put Brown up first and with a 9-8 lead, Derrick took over. The sophomore scored the next five points for Brown with four solo blocks and a kill to put Brown up 14-8. Up 17-12, Miller would had four more kills and Derrick had two kills. The duo also combined for a block as Brown won set three 25-13.
Brown jumped out to a 7-4 lead before Columbia responded with a run to go up 13-10. The teams traded runs until Columbia jumped ahead19-16. Brown responded with four-straight points to jump back ahead. Two kills by Miller and an ace by Park gave Brown match point at 24-21. Columbia fought off two points but Sheire finished the match with a kill.

Brown will take on Cornell at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
