Volleyball falls in four sets at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown volleyball fell in four sets to Yale on Friday, 25-16, 25-12, 22-25, 25-21, to start the second half of Ivy League play.
Brown was led by Sophia Miller on offense with 12 kills and Beau Vanderlaan. Vanderlaan hit .524 on the night but the Bears' offense struggled to get much going, hitting just .101 on the night. Kate Sheire had eight kills and Cierra Jenkins finished the night with 31 assists.
The Bears fell behind quickly, dropping the first two sets as Brown was outhit .444 to .125 in the first set and .577 to .143 in the second.
The third set turned as Brown got its net defense working. The Bears, who finished with 16 blocks on the night, had six blocks during the third set. For the match, Elise Curtin and Vanderlaan each had four blocks and Miller and Kayla Griebl each had three.
Brown used a 5-0 run early on to take a big lead as the Bears got two aces from Jilienne Widener and a block by Vanderlaan and Jenkins. Yale cut the lead to one multiple times but Brown always had an answer, eventually earning set point at 24-21 with a kill by Miller. After a point from Yale, Curtin and Miller teamed up for a block to give the Bears the set.
Set four was tied at 11 before a 3-0 with back-to-back aces by Miller to go up 14-11 before Yale went on a run to take a one-point lead. The Bears tied the set on a kill by Griebl but Yale responded, pushing its lead to four. Brown cut the lead to 23-21 after a block by the duo of Sheire and Curtin but a service error by Brown and an ace by Yale ended the match.
UP NEXT
Brown will be back home for two matches as the Bears will host Columbia on Friday (Oct. 28) and Cornell on Saturday (Oct. 29).
