Volleyball's win streak ends with four-set loss to Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball's five-match winning streak came to an end in a four-set loss to Princeton on Saturday.
It turned out to be a defensive battle between two of the best offensive teams in the Ivy League. Both teams came into the game hitting over .300 on the season but Princeton finished the game hitting .206 and Brown hit .176.
Brown (9-7, 5-2 Ivy) collected 17 blocks on the night, to just six from Princeton (14-3, 6-1 Ivy), but the Tigers had 83 digs to Brown's 67. The Bears finished with just 48 kills to Princeton's 63.
Sophia Miller led Brown with 13 kills and had 14 digs for another double-double on the season. Cierra Jenkins also had a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs. Two other Bears finished with double-figure digs with Victoria Vo leading Brown with 21 digs and Jessie Golden had 10.
A the net, Gabby Derrick led the Bears with nine blocks. Kate Sheire had eight blocks and nine kills and Beau Vanderlaan had six blocks to go with eight kills.
Brown took the first bid lead in the match with a 12-9 lead after a kill by Sheire and an ace by Miller. The Bears increased the lead to 18-13 after a 5-1 run that finished with a kill by Miller. A kill by Jenkins and an error from Princeton put Brown up 21-18 but things changed as Princeton scored the next six points to earn set point. A kill by Sheire fought of one set point but Princeton took the first set 25-22.
The Bears fell behind 9-5 early but used a 5-1 run to tie the set at 10. The blocks started come on strong during the middle of the set as Brown finished with just five kills during the second set but had 11 blocks in the frame. Back-to-back blocks by Vanderlaan teaming with Sheire and Griebl put Brown up 17-15. After another block put Brown up two, Princeton scored four-straight points. The Tigers earned set point at 24-20 but Brown scored three-straight points, including two blocks from Derrick and Sheire to pull within one but a kill ended the set.
A 5-0 run midway through the third put Brown up 15-9 with kills by Jilienne Widener, Jenkins and Sheire, plus two aces by Vo. Blocks by Vanderlaan and Widener and Vanderlaan and Jenkins put Brown ahead 19-11. Brown survived a 6-1 run late in the set to get kills by Miller, Sheire and Widener to win set three 25-19.
Brown went up early after a 5-0 run, taking an 8-6 lead in the fourth but Princeton followed with a 7-1 run to go up 14-10. The Bears pulled within three at 21-18 but Brown could not complete the comeback, falling in the fourth 25-20.

Brown will be on the road to start the second half of Ivy League play, traveling to Yale on Friday (Oct. 21).
