Bears Comeback Falls Short Against RPI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A third period comeback bid by the Brown women's hockey team came up short on Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 defeat against Rensselaer. The victory also ends the Bears' three-game winning streak against RPI.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Senior Lizzy Gross scored her third goal of the season for Brown with just under five minutes remaining in the game. She also led the team with a game-high six shots on goal.
Senior Tina Paolillo and sophomore Sonja Bjornson each collected assists.
Brown outshot RPI 32-21 in the game.
Senior Hailey Kliczko made 21 saves for Brown, including a big stop on a breakaway in the closing minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Brown (2-13-2, 2-7-1 ECAC) outshot RPI 9-1 to begin the game and 15-8 in the opening period. The Bears put four shots on goal on the period's only power play just over five minutes into the period.
Just after regaining full strength, RPI struck first on breakaway attempt when Maddy Peterson grabbed her own rebound and slid it into the net for her fourth goal of the season at the 7:56 mark.
The Engineers (7-14-0, 4-8-0 ECAC) quickly added to the lead early in the second period when MJ Alexander sent a wrist shot toward goal from the blue line that was tipped in from the low slot by Mika Jahnke at 2:27 of the period.
The Bears nearly broke through in the final two minutes of the period on the power play when Madie Stockfish got a clean look from the low slot, but drilled one off the crossbar.
RPI added to its lead in the opening minute of the third period on a shot from the top of the slot to make it a three-goal lead.
The Bears started a rally with just under five minutes to go when Gross grabbed a loose puck on the side wall and skated it in front, and put home a rebound after her initial shot was stopped for her third goal of the season to pull the Bears within two with 4:53 to play.
Kliczko made a huge stop on a breakaway with three minutes to go, keeping it a two-goal game.
RPI put the game away with an empty net marker with 31 seconds left.

UP NEXT
Brown will hit the road for a two-game trip next weekend to face Harvard on Friday, Jan. 14 and Dartmouth on Saturday, Jan. 15.
