PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's rugby team fell 26-19 in overtime to Army in the season opener. Despite the overtime period, the match is ruled a draw in the NIRA slate.
"Of course we would've liked to have been on the winning end," head coach Kathy Flores said. "But I'm very pleased with how the team played. We went from whistle to whistle with no break in intensity and stood up to a team that pressured us all game long and matched them step for step and even applied our own pressure. It's a great start to our season."
After a slow start to the game, Zyana Thomas was able to punch in the first try for either side to give the Bears a 5-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, the Black Knights evened things up at 5. The first half was full of big tackles, but was highlighted by a Noelle Lewis play with three minutes remaining. The two sides would go into the half tied at five.
Army took the lead at the start of the second after a Sydney Schaaf try and a Codi Butt conversion putting the Black Knights up 12-5. Butt added to Army's lead at the 27-minute mark making the game 19-5, but for the remainder of the half it was all Bears.
Mahdia Parker scored on a long run after fending off several Army defenders and Olivia Duba made the kick to bring Brown back to 19-12.
Kate Molloy tied the game with 15 minutes to play with some help from Erin Jessop and Macy Mackenzie made the conversion. The second half would end with the teams tied at 19.
In overtime, Butt continued her big game for Army as she scored the game-winning try to give the Black Knights a 26-19 victory.
The Bears resume action on Saturday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Mount St. Mary's for their first road contest of the year.
