PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After overcoming a slow start, Brown pulled away from Cornell to win 3-1 and earn its fourth-straight win. Kate Sheire led the way for the Bears offense again with 19 kills.
Behind Sheire, Sophia Miller also finished in double figures with 13 kills and added nine digs. Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 45 assists and posted a double-double with 12 digs.
On defense, Victoria Vo finished the night with 21 digs and Katilyn Wong added 15. Beau Vanderlaan led the net defense with seven blocks.
The Bears are now 2-0 to start Ivy League play for the first time since 2004.
"I was really proud of the team tonight," said head coach Ahen Kim. "Things don't always start out the way you want but its about bettering your play from wherever you start. We started down tonight but got better as the match got on."
Brown (9-3, 2-0 Ivy) started the match hitting .080 in the first set and dropped the first frame by a score of 25-20. A tight set was broken open by a 3-0 run that made the score 17-14 and the Bears could not pull back in to the set.
The offense woke up in set two as the Bears hit .293 and led the set wire-to-wire. Kills by Sheire and Jenkins helped Brown take a 3-0 lead and the Bears pushed it to 9-3 with a 5-0 run that featured kills by Sheire and blocks by Vanderlaan and Sheire. Cornell cut the lead to three multiple times in the set but Brown always found a way to answer. Sheier had two late kills and Miller finished off the set with one of her own.
Another hot start in set three saw Brown jump out to an early 5-1 lead and a kill by Vanderlaan once again put Brown up 9-3. Kills by Vanderlaan and Gabby Derrick made the score 13-7 in favor of the Bears and after kills by Miller, Jenkins and Kayla Greibl, Brown was up 20-12. An error from Cornell gave Brown set point and Sheire finished off the set with a kill.
Set four started with a Cornell point but three-straight kills from Sheire and one from Miller turned the score around as Brown again took the early lead. Up 10-6, Brown allowed three-straight points but got kills from Jilienne Widener and a service ace from Jenkins to go up 13-9. Vanderlaan and Jenkins combined for another block to put Brown up 19-15 and the run for the Bears started there.
With Miller on the service line, the junior served an ace followed by a kill from Vanderlaan. After another ace by Miller, she finished off the match with a kill to give Brown the win.
The Bears will be back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. to take on the Columbia Lions.
