DAVIS, Calif – The UC Davis Aggies (4-3) scored in the second and third quarters and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Brown Bears (3-3) Sunday morning at Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
Danielle van Rootselaar scored for the Bears and led the team with 12 shots.
"UC Davis had the edge today, they are a physical team and were able to finish on their chances," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We created numerous scoring opportunities but did not execute in those moments. I am very happy with the way our defensive unit is playing. Julia Hitti and Jodie Brine both had an outstanding weekend. We are looking forward to starting league play next week."
A scoreless first quarter ended with offensive chances at both ends of the field. UC Davis goalkeeper Kalli Wagnon (4 saves) made one stop and the Aggies had a defensive save while Brine (5 saves) stopped all three shots she faced in the quarter.
The Aggies broke the deadlock in the final minutes of the second quarter as Lizzy Tedrow found a loose ball in the left side of the circle and blasted a high shot past Brine and the Brown defense.
UC Davis doubled its lead with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter off a penalty corner. Audrey Matthew fired the initial shot and Izzy Porco deflected the ball past Brine for the goal.
The Bears pushed offensively looking for two goals in the final 15 minutes, but the Aggie defense stood tall on five Brown penalty corners in the early part of the fourth.
Rootselaar cut the Aggie lead in half with 55 seconds remaining, intercepting a UC Davis pass and scoring on a quick rush down the left side of the circle.
Brown finished the game with a 21-12 advantage in shots in the game and an 11-0 shot advantage in the fourth quarter. The Bears also held a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Brown begins Ivy League play next Saturday (Sept. 25) at Yale. The conference opener is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Johnson Field.
