The Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame was founded in 1965 to honor the contributions of those whose efforts have added significantly to the heritage of the State of Rhode Island.
According to their website, "The Hall of Fame exists to honor and recognize, and to extol and publicize the achievements of those Rhode Island men and women who have, in the words of the HOF induction citation, "made significant contributions to their community, state, and/or nation." It is also our mission to tell the story of Rhode Island History via interactive technology using the biographies of our inductees, noting their collective impact upon every phase of Rhode Island's development."
Reynolds was inducted into the Brown Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
An outstanding basketball player on College Hill, he was co-captain of the 1967-68 Brown quintet. His 909 career points ranked seventh at the time. He was elected to the All-Decade Team for January's 100 seasons of Brown Basketball Celebration.
A third generation Brunonian, Reynolds's father, William D. Reynolds, graduated in 1937 and his grandfather William W. Reynolds, Class of 1907, was elected to the basketball All-Decade Team, having captained the 1906-07 team.
After graduating in 1968 with a degree in English, Reynolds taught English for three years at Barrington High School, his other alma mater. After freelance writing, he joined the Providence Journal as a reporter in 1981, followed by sports writing and finally as a sports columnist. Reynolds has covered Larry Bird and the Celtics, Roger Clemens and the Red Sox as well Tom Brady and the Patriots. He has also covered the World Series, the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals and the Final Four.
Reynolds is a prolific writer and has authored many books on sports, including Cousy with Celtics legend, Bob Cousy. He is a writer for all seasons but basketball is clearly his passion.
His writing is powerful, incisive, poignant, penetrating and thought provoking. It is full of wit and irony and challenges the reader to think about the larger issues surrounding sport and society. His popular weekly "For What It's Worth" was a Rhode Island institution which ranged covered a variety of topics in sports and life, providing one-liners and food for thought on society and the contemporary human condition.
Reynolds has been a fixture on the Brown basketball scene since the 1950's, when he began sitting under the basket at Marvel Gym.
