PROVIDENCE, RI – Brown University Men's Basketball will have two players representing the United States while competing on the international stage next month. Tamenang Choh (GS – Lowell, MA) and Jaylan Gainey (Sr – Greensboro, NC) will play on one of three teams representing the U.S. in Spain and France as part of an initiative with U.S. East Coast Basketball.
Choh is a two-time All-Ivy player who will return to the Bears' line-up this fall as a grad student at Brown. He earned Academic All-Ivy honors as a senior and should be one of the leading candidates in the preseason for Ivy League Player of the Year in 2021-22.
Gainey (6-9 F) is the reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocked shots (2.1 per game) during the 2019-2020 season. He also shot 69% from the field that season for the Bears.
"I'm really looking forward to showcasing Ivy League talent overseas," said Gainey. "Not too many people get this type of opportunity and I'm very grateful for it. Me and T (Tamenang Choh) are going to make the most of it."
Choh added, "I'm extremely excited to represent the United States in these exhibition games. It's an honor."
Brown men's basketball head coach Mike Martin is also excited for the opportunity for his two veteran leaders. "This will be a great opportunity for Tamenang and Jaylan," said Martin. "They will have the opportunity to play for some of college basketball's best coaches in Frank Martin and Fran McCaffery. They'll be able to get some very valuable game experience as they continue to prepare for this coming season and they'll be able to spend time in a beautiful country filled with culture and history. We're really excited for them!"
This will be the second time that Choh and Gainey will be competing in Spain. The two were part of the 2019-2020 team that visited Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona, Spain in the summer of 2019 where they played against teams in each city.
Both Choh and Gainey will play for the Blue Team along with three other Ivy League players – Zavian McLean and Liam Murphy from Columbia and Nate Ogbu from Dartmouth.
The Blue Team will be coached by University of South Carolina head coach Frank Martin. He will be assisted by Iowa's Fran McCaffrey and Florida Memorial's Jason Gilliam-Alexander.
