PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown Athletics has announced an upgrade of the field at Brown Stadium from natural grass to synthetic turf. Thanks to the generosity of alumnus and Brown Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Richard Gouse '68, P'02, the project's lead donor, Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium will be designated as the location of future Stadium events.Â
Â
"The new state-of-the-art turf at Brown Stadium will provide our student-athletes and coaches with a modern home field on which to win Ivy League championships," said Vice President of Athletics and Recreation M. Grace Calhoun '92, Ph.D. "This project is an important step in elevating Brown Football under Coach Perry and implementing his 'play fast' coaching philosophy."
Â
Site work is underway and is on track to be completed in time for the 2021 season opener against the University of Rhode Island on September 18, the 105th renewal of the Governor's Cup game. Dating back to 1909, the Bears hold a 73-29-2 series advantage over the Rams.
Â
"With the installation of the new turf, Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium will provide our players with the best surface to compete for, and win, Ivy League trophies," said Brown Football Head Coach James Perry '00. "Brown Football plays fast, and we will now have the field to complement our playing style. Ever since I played football as an undergraduate, I have seen first-hand Richard's passion for and support of our student-athletes. It will be an exciting moment for us all to hit that field running in the fall!"
Â
In addition to Gouse, the facility upgrade was made possible by the support of many other Brown Football donors, including fellow Hall of Famer Paul Choquette '60, P'88, P'97.
Â
"As Brown Stadium approaches its centennial, the playing field is the most needed improvement," said Gouse. "With a new, safe, fast, and advanced artificial turf, Brown will be in an enviable competitive position. I would not have made this gift unless I was convinced that the University is on the right path and has the right leadership to compete for Ivy League championships in football as well as other sports."Â
Â
This project builds on the momentum of the BrownTogether campaign, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the University's history. Campaign priorities for Brown Athletics include facility enhancements and fully endowing varsity programs.
Â
R.A.D. Sports is leading the project in coordination with the Brown Facilities Management Office, Brown Athletics, and the Brown Sports Foundation.Â
