ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Brown University sailing finished in 11th place following the second and final day of competition at the 2021 ICSA Coed National Championship on Tuesday on the Severn River.
Â
Competing for the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy at the two-day event hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in a single round robin format, the Bears posted a score of 343 for 11th place in the 18-team field following the conclusion of the 18-race rotations.
Â
The Bears trailed 10th-place George Washington (333) by 10 points while leading 12th-place Hobart and William Smith (354) by 11 points in addition to leading six other programs at the event. Navy (210), Stanford (236), and Jacksonville (260) claimed the regatta's top three spots. Brown competed at the event for the first time as a varsity program.
Â
In the B Division, Brown finished in fourth place with a score of 131. The Bears' B division boat placed in the top four in each of its first seven races and later tallied a victory in race 11B and a third-place finish in race 14B.
Â
For the A Division, the Bears came in 15th place with a score of 206. The boat posted a second-place finish in race 12A to end day one and also notched a third-place finish in race 1A to open the regatta.
Â
Junior skipper Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil), senior crew Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.), and junior crew Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.) represented Brown in the B Division.
Â
Junior skipper Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.), junior skipper Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.), and junior crew Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.) competed for the Bears in the A Division with Hutchinson also shifting to the division for race 18. Sophomore Hunter Zonnenberg (Marblehead, Mass.) served the program as a reserve.
Â
Brown qualified for the coed national championship after winning the New England Championship on April 18. Brown and Boston College were the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships.
Â
The event closed Brown Athletics' competitive schedule – which began on April 3 due to COVID-19 – for the 2020-21 academic year. After a regular season that included only local competition, the Bears achieved several top team finishes at the national level, including women's sailing (fourth), men's crew (fifth), team race sailing (sixth), women's crew (eighth), and coed sailing (11th).
