ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Brown University sailing stands in sixth place after the first day of competition at the 2021 ICSA Coed National Championship on Monday on the Severn River.
Competing for the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy at the two-day event hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in a single round robin format, the Bears sit in the top third of the standings in the 18-team field behind a score of 191 with 12 of the 18-race rotations completed.
The Bears remain within eight points of third-place Stanford (183), six points of fourth-place Jacksonville (185), and one point of fifth-place Georgetown (190). Brown stands two points ahead of seventh-place UC Santa Barbara (193) and also leads 11 other programs at the event. Navy (127) and College of Charleston (156) hold the top two spots. Brown is competing at the event for the first time as a varsity program.
Brown's entry in the B Division stands in second place in the division with a score of 64 – just one-point behind first-place Charleston (63). The Bears' B division boat placed in the top four in each of its first seven races and later tallied a victory in race 11B. Brown's entry in the A Division sits in 13th place in its division with a score of 127. The boat posted a second-place finish in race 12A to end the day and also notched a third-place finish in race 1A at the day's start.
Junior skipper Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.) and junior crew Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.) competed for the Bears in the A Division with junior Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) acting as a skipper in place of Murphy in races 11-12.
Junior skipper Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior crew Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) represented Brown in the B Division with junior Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.) acting as a crew in place of Hutchinson in races 7-10. Sophomore Hunter Zonnenberg (Marblehead, Mass.) served the program as a reserve.
Brown qualified for the coed national championship after winning the New England Championship on April 18. Brown and Boston College were the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships.
In program history, Brown has posted 13 top-three finishes at the ICSA Coed National Championship – including national titles in 1942 and 1948 – with the most recent top-three finish coming with a third-place showing in 2010.
Next, Brown will finish competition at the ICSA Coed National Championship tomorrow – Tuesday, June 8.
