Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.

Beatrice Minkins '36, Field Hockey

Beatrice Minkins '36 was one of four African American sisters from Pawtucket, R.I., who attended Pembroke College. She played varsity field hockey for the Bears and competed in baseball and basketball on class teams during her time on College Hill. Minkins also maintained a friendship with Helen Johns '36, who won a gold medal in women's swimming at the 1932 Olympic Games. Following her time at Brown, Minkins worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and then for the Rhode Island Employment Service for nearly four decades. Her main work was with the WIN (Work Incentive) Program, providing job training and locating day care for mothers with small children. In 1986 – 50 years after her graduation from Pembroke College – Minkins served as a marshal at Brown University's commencement ceremony.
