PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's basketball team will take to the court for the first time since March 7, 2020 when the Bears travel to Fairfield on Tuesday (Nov. 9) to open play of the 2021-22 season.
The game against Fairfield will take place at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn., and will begin at 7 p.m. For those not able to be in attendance, the game will be streamed on ESPN3.
The Bears sideline will look vastly different from the last time Brown took the court as only seven players from the 2019-20 team are on this season's roster. The Bears also a new face at the helm of the program as Monique LeBlanc will coach her first game as the head coach of the Bears. LeBlanc was named head coach for the Bears in April of 2020 but has not coached a game as the 2020-21 season was not played due to COVID-19.
Ashley Ducharme returns as the only senior on the roster for Brown and is the second-highest returning scorer for the Bears. In her sophomore season, Ducharme played in 27 games, making 21 starts. She added 4.8 points per game on 40 percent shooting and pulled down 5.6 rebounds per contest.
Maddie Mullin is the leading returning scorer having averaged 6.4 points per game as a sophomore back in 2019-20. Mullin hit 47 threes in 27 games and dished out 42 assists. Twice during the season, the Wellesley, Mass., native matched her career-high with 15 points.
The rest of the junior class features Sydney Rosant (3.9 ppg, 32% 3fg), Fiona Finn (2.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg), Lexi Love (2.3 ppg, 52 assists), Dani Short (1.4 ppg, 1.8 rpg) and Myla Cox.
Beyond the junior class there are 10 players on the roster that have yet to play in a collegiate basketball game. The six-player sophomore class had its first season cancelled and is hungry to get on the court for the first time in two years. Mya Murray, Kyla Jones, Grace Kirk, Emma Laszweski, Charlotte Jewell and Chantal Nadia have been around the program for a season but will finally take to the court against Fairfield.
The freshman class features four players from across the country. Charlee Arthur (Bellevue, Wash.) and Isabella Mauricio (Pleasaton, Calif.) come to Brown from the west coast while Gianna Aiello (Matawan, N.J.) and Amanda Latkany (Rye, N.Y.) are from the northeast.
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD
Fairfield went 11-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play last season. The Stags lost in the second round of the MAAC Tournament to Marist last season.
Senior Lou Lopez-Senechal led the Stags last season with 16.8 points per game. Sam Lewis, the third-leading scorer from a season ago, returns for her fifth season after scoring 9.3 points per game.
Brown will be on the road to begin the season with games at Fairfield on opening night, at Sacred Heart on Sunday (Nov. 14) and at Bryant on Tuesday (Nov. 16).
