Women's Rugby Closes Regular Season with 34-10 Win at Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Brown women's rugby team took a 34-10 win over Mount St. Mary's in the 2021 regular season finale, securing a spot in the NIRA Tier I semifinals.

"We are very proud to be heading into a Division I semifinal next weekend," said Christine Newcomb. "Our success is just another nod to the incredible vision that Kathy had for Brown Rugby. We are honored to be representing her and our legacy with our accomplishments this season."

Brown jumped to a quick lead with a try from Morgan Cunningham after she received a pass from Lexi Nelson.

The Bears doubled the lead to make it 10-0 as Mahdia Parker scored the first of her two tries of the match.

Akilah Cathey recorded Brown's third try at the midpoint of the first half off a pass from Zy Thomas. Olivia Duba nailed the conversion to push Brown's lead to 17-0.

Six minutes later, Zoe Belge recorded her first try of the season to make it 22-0 in favor of the Bears.

Not finished yet, Delaney Dill tallied her first conversion of the season with three minutes left in the opening half, and with a successful kick from Duba, Brown took a 29-0 lead into the second half.

In the opening 12 minutes of the second half, Mount St. Mary's and Brown traded tries with Parker touching the ball down for her second score of the day.

With 15 minutes remaining, the Mountaineers scored a try to make it 34-10, where it stood until the final horn.

"It was a tough game – we had a lot of people playing some new positions but we still came out on top," said Emme Ohnmacht '25. "We are super excited to move forward into the semifinals. We are really going to focus this week and tie up some loose ends heading into Dartmouth."

Brown improves to 4-2-1 with the win and secured the fourth-seed in the NIRA Tier I playoffs. The Bears will take on top-seeded Dartmouth (7-0-0) next Saturday in Hanover, New Hampshire.
