Water polo advances in NWPC Tournament with win over Iona

PRINCETON, N.J. – Brown water polo earned a win over Iona in the first round of the NWPC Tournament on Friday (Nov. 19). The Bears used a strong second quarter to led to a 14-11 win over the Gaels.
Brown was led by Cole Atwell and Andrew Penner who both scored three goals, while Nick Berry, and Gabe Chang each finished with two goals. Ugo Piovan finished with 15 saves in goal for the Bears.
The win marks the 300th-career victory for head coach Felix Mercado at the helm of the Bears' program.
Anderson Todd and Berry scored within 30 seconds of each other midway through the first quarter. Penner scored with just over two minutes left in the quarter to give Brown a 3-2 lead but Iona responded with two goals to jump back on top. Brown got a goal from Atwell right before the quarter ended to make it 4-4 after the first.
Chang and Enright started out the second quarter with goals to make it 6-4 before Iona got one on the board. Brown kept the Gaels off the board for the rest of the quarter while getting goals from Atwell and Kirshon to take an 8-5 lead in to halftime.
The lead was extended to 10-5 with goals from Atwell and Chang before Iona finally scored another goal. Berry responded with a goal but Iona scored four goals over the next three minutes to climb back into the game. Brown's lone goal over that period was one from Penner.
Filip Aleksic scored early in the fourth to put Brown up by three and the Bears defense didn't allow a goal from Iona until 1:41 left in the game. After the Gaels scored a goal, Brown got it right back with one from Penner for the final score.
Brown will take on No. 1 seed Princeton at Noon on Saturday, Nov. 20 with a spot in the finals of the tournament up for grabs.
