ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Brown men's basketball team fell to Creighton 78-57 in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Paradise Jam Friday evening.
"I don't think we played our best by any means, head coach Mike Martin said. "But Creighton deserves a lot of credit for that. They play with really good pace offensively and put us on our heels early. I thought we had some flashes of good play at each end, but not nearly enough against a team like that.
"It's a quick turnaround tomorrow and a great opportunity to bounce back."
Kino Lilly Jr. had a team-high 12 points. Paxson Wojcik had 10. Tamenang Choh came off the bench in his first action since the first game of the season and contributed nine points, four rebounds, and one block. Jaylan Gainey led the team with three blocks.
Creighton started out fast and was extremely efficient, shooting 11-for-16 from the floor to build a 26-10 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Brown responded with a 14-7 run over the next seven minutes to cut the Bluejays' lead to 33-24. Gainey, Dan Friday, Wojcik, Lilly Jr., and Choh all had points during the run, paced by Lilly Jr.'s four.
The Bluejays closed the first half on a run of their own, 13-5, to take the 46-29 edge into halftime.
Down 17 at the start of the second half, the Bears put together stretches of solid play during the second frame, but would not get within 14 for the remainder of the game. A jumper by Aaron Cooley followed by a dunk by Choh with 6:44 remaining in the game got the deficit to 14, but that's as close as Brown would get.
On the game, the Bluejays shot 55.9% from the field. In the first half, they were 5-for-9 from three, compared to Brown's 1-for-9. The Bears shot 36.7% on the evening.
The 2021 Paradise Jam continues tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 20 when Brown takes on Bradley at 3:15 p.m. EST.
