St. John's knocks women's soccer out of NCAA Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team fell to St. John's 1-0 in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bears finish the year at 12-4 and with a perfect 7-0 Ivy League record, the first in program history.
"Obviously, I'm disappointed with the result," head coach Kia McNeill said. "It was a tough game, a hard-fought game on both sides. I thought both defenses were tremendous.
"I think we had the better of play at times and had some good chances on goal. But the postseason is about finishing your opportunities when they come. St John's had a great opportunity at the end of that first overtime and they were able to put it away. That's what it comes down to sometimes.
"Credit to them. They played and competed hard. They are a really good team. They are very stingy defensively and we just couldn't find the back of the net today."
Through the first 25 minutes of action, the teams combined for just two total shots, one a side, as they worked to figure out their opposition. Brown's best chances of the first half came in the 41st and 42nd minutes. First, Sheyenne Allen ran onto a deflected ball by the Red Storm defense and beat the keeper with a shot to the bottom right corner. It would have put the Bears up 1-0, but a St. John's defender was in the perfect spot and cleared it off the line.
Less than a minute later, in an almost identical play, Brittany Raphino sent a ball to the bottom left corner, but again a Red Storm defender kept the game scoreless.
The first half would end tied at zero, despite Brown holding the 7-2 advantage in shots and 6-0 in corners.
The only look on goal for Brown in the second 45 came in the 47th minute, when Rebecca Rosen got on the end of a corner, but her shot was straight at the St. John's goalie.
The Red Storm got their offense going a bit more in the second half, putting five shots on goal, but Kayla Thompson was ready and stopped all five.
Still tied at zero, the game went into overtime. Brown earned the first shot of the period, but St. John's had the last. The Bears half-cleared a free kick, but Isabelle Aviza corralled it and sent it back in to Ava Collins. Collins was able to turn and get a shot off from just outside the six-yard box that found the back of the net and gave St. John's the win.
"Today just came down to who was going to finish," senior Maesyn G'Bye said. "I think we left it all out there today."
On the day, Brown outshot St. John's 13-10 and earned nine corners to the Red Storm's one.
"Obviously, I'm not happy with the result today, but I don't think it can take away from the season that this team has had," McNeill said. "It doesn't take away from us going 7-0 in the Ivy League and having one of the most historic seasons in Brown women's soccer history.
"Especially for our senior leadership, they've been incredible since day one, from freshman year till today. They've really helped us change this program and move it forward."
