Women's tennis hosts Brown Classic, competes at ITA Super Regional

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team hosted the Brown Classic this weekend on Saturday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct. 17. Britany Lau also represented the Bears at the ITA Super Regionals.

"The Brown Classic was a great event for our players to get more competitive opportunities on home turf," head coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "We competed hard in every match we played, which is fundamentally the most important step in growing as a competitive team. Now it is up to each player to take it upon themselves to study the match film, learn what they did right and what areas need work and address them in practice and individual sessions."

The Bears began their weekend with a 5-2 win over Villanova on Saturday. Olivia Mariotti, Gabriella Dellacono, and Selena Williams earned wins in singles. Teams of Ryan Peus and Ali Benedetto as well as Mariotti and Dellacono were victorious in doubles to claim the team win.

Also on Saturday, Brown fell to Boston University in a close match, 4-3. Julia Newman and Benedetto won their doubles match, as did Dellacono and Mariotti. But in singles, Benedetto and Addison Ahlstrom were the only two Bears to win their matches, thus giving BU the victory.

On Sunday, Brown played in another tight match and fell to Dartmouth, 4-3. Ahlstrom and Dellacono won their singles matches for two points, while Ahlstrom and Benedetto won their doubles match, as did Mariotti and Dellacono.

At Super Regionals, Lau competed against St. John's Mouna Bouzgarrou and ended up falling in three sets.

"Britany competed hard at Super Regionals but ended up losing to a solid player from St. John's in three sets," Schmidhauser said. "She was setting up the points really well, but at times her execution wasn't as sharp as it needed to be. Britany is an excellent student of the game and I have no doubt that she will learn from her experience and use it to get better moving forward."
