PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears got back in the win column with a 26-20 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats Saturday at Marvel Field.
Brown improves to 3-1-1 on the season while Quinnipiac drops to 1-4 on the season.
"As always we played as a team today. When things weren't going our way, we made adjustments," said assistant coach Christine Newcomb. "Quinnipiac came out strong in the second half and tested our endurance, but thanks to the strong leadership of our captains Olivia Duba and Gemma Ryu, we were able to hold them off."
Ryu opened the scoring with a long run and try with support from Faith Chen, Elizabeth Mahoney, and Akilah Cathey. The conversion from Duba was good to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.
Johanna Bandler added another try for the Bears to push the lead to 12-0 in the opening half. Brown's offense kept the pressure on the Bobcats as Morgan Cunningham converted a try with a conversion from Duba for a 19-0 Bear lead.
The Bobcats scored late in the first half with a try to cut into Brown's lead and make it 19-5. Quinnipiac kept the momentum into the second half, scoring tries three minutes and eight minutes into the second to make it 19-15.
Duba broke the Quinnipiac scoring run with 18 minutes remaining in the game with her first try of the match, and she hit a successful kick for a 26-15 lead.
The Bobcats scored the final points of the match with 12 minutes to play with a try to make it 26-20, but Brown kept Quinnipiac off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game for the victory.
We were really happy with the result today. It was a hard-fought, very physical match with Quinnipiac, especially in the breakdown," said Ryu. "There was a lot of back and forth kicking and our back three really showed their abilities today. We were appreciative that Quinnipiac made the trip down and are looking forward to the next game against Dartmouth on the 30th."
Brown's match against Dartmouth is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Marvel Field on Saturday (Oct. 30).
