Comeback Bid Falls Short as Field Hockey Drops Conference Match to Penn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Penn scored two goals in the opening five minutes and held on for a 3-2 Ivy League win over Brown Saturday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Brown drops to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play while Penn improves to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play.
"It was a disappointing loss but we got back into the game with three strong quarters after a shaky first," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I was proud of the way our team battled back into the game and we're looking forward to tomorrow's match against Providence."
Meghan Ward gave Penn the early lead, firing a feed from Lis Zandbergen past Jodie Brine (5 saves) 2:46 into the opening quarter.
Penn doubled its lead at the 4:43 mark of the first as Julia Russo collected a rebound and found the net.
Neither team found the net in the second or third quarters with only three combined penalty corners in the frames. Penn's Sabien Paumen (9 saves) turned aside four Brown shots in the middle quarters while Brine made three stops.
The Quakers opened the fourth quarter scoring off a penalty corner. Elita Van Staden took the initial shot to the left corner of the net where Courtney Kenah tipped the shot home.
Brown got on the board with 8:39 remaining as Cameron Kinsella scored off a pass from Stacey Lukasheva to put the Bears on the board.
Brine exited the game with 3:12 to play in the final quarter for the extra attacker. Penn was awarded two penalty corners shortly after, and the Bears stood firm without a goalie with defensive saves from Danielle van Rootselaar and Julia Hitti.
Brown was awarded a penalty stroke with 16 seconds remaining and van Rootselaar extended her point streak with the goal off the stroke.
Van Rootselaar has now recorded at least a point in nine straight games. During the stretch, the senior eight goals and two assists for 18 points.
Brown finished the game with an 18-15 advantage in shots and an 11-10 edge in shots on goal. The Bears also finished with an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Brown heads across town to take on the Providence College Friars at Lennon Field. Sunday's game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will stream on FloLive.
