
Volleyball beats Penn in four sets for ninth-straight victory

PHILADELPHIA – Four Bears finished with double-figure kills as Brown beat Penn in four sets to earn its ninth-straight win. The Bears were led by Zoe Ubamadu, who finished with 13 kills.
Brown (13-3, 6-0 Ivy) had four players reach 10 kills for the first time this season as the offense hit at least .359 in each of the three sets the Bears won. Behind Ubamadu, Kate Sheire and Beau Vanderlaan each added 11. Sophia Miller reached the 10-kill mark with the final kill of the game. Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 43 assists.
On defense, Brown finished the match with 13 blocks. Vanderlaan led the team with seven blocks, Ubamadu had six, and Sheire finished with five. The Bears finished with 73 digs en route to holding Penn to .060 hitting. Victoria Vo topped the team with 24 digs while Jenkins posted yet another double-double, collecting 14.
We executed really well in the first two sets and I was really proud of the team for that," said head coach Ahen Kim. "We knew that Princeton was on the backend of the weekend but we had to keep our eyes on the challenge ahead of us tonight. We did a good job of that and that shows a lot of maturity."
The Bears also picked up eight service aces with Kayla Griebl leading the way with three. Vo and Miller each had two.
Brown made quick work of the opening set, hitting .444 and taking down the Quakers 25-8 in the first frame. The Bears jumped out to a 6-1 lead and after the second ace of the set, Brown had a 10-2 advantage on the scoreboard. Up 11-4, Brown broke the set open further with a 6-0 run. Two aces by Greibl and a kill by Vanderlaan highlighted the run for the Bears. Ubamadu and Vanderlaan had kills late in the set to close out the frame.
In set two, two kills by Sheire but two more aces, one from Jenkins and one from Miller, helped Brown take a 7-1 lead. Later in the set, back-to-back blocks by Ubamadu pushed the lead to 16-7. The Bears took advantage of multiple errors by Penn and got a kill by Jenkins to close out the second set at 25-13.
Having cruised in the first two sets, Brown's offense cooled in the third which allowed Penn to go up early at 7-3. Brown battled back with two 3-0 runs to take a 10-9 lead after two errors by Penn. Sheire and Vanderlaan posted kills to knot the set at 14 but Penn scored seven of the next eight points to take a 21-15 lead. The Bears fought off two set points with a block by Miller and Ubamadu and a kill by Widener but Penn took set three 25-23 after a kill.
Another fast start by Brown, featuring kills by Sheire, Vanderlaan and an ace from Vo put the Bears up 9-2. Vanderlaan had a part in three blocks during a 4-0 run by Brown to jump ahead 14-5. After Penn ended the run, a kill by Miller followed by two from Ubamadu put the Bears u 17-6. Brown went up 23-10 after a block by the duo of Vanderlaan and Jilienne Widener. Penn scored three-straight points to stay in the set but Vanderlaan and Miller closed out the match with kills.
Brown will now head to Princeton for a matchup against the Tigers to close out the first half of Ivy League play on Saturday. The match against Princeton will be a battle between two 6-0 teams and will begin at 5 p.m.
