PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University head women's basketball coach Monique LeBlanc has announced the signing of Charlee as the newest member of the Brown women's basketball program on Thursday (Oct. 14). Charlee comes to Brown through a partnership with Team IMPACT, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team.
"It is really special to have an opportunity to influence any young people and to serve as role models for younger people," said LeBlanc. "A lot of times in sports we talk about adversity but what is unique about Charlee is she brings that perspective about what adversity really is. She joined the team as, what I believe is intended to be a great thing for them, but in my experience with Team IMPACT, we the coaches and players get so much out of it. We learn a lot from the kids."
Charlee was officially introduced at a signing day press conference on Thursday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center, during which she signed her official letter of intent. Charlee's family, along with all of her new teammates and members of the Brown athletic department were in attendance. Now an official member of the Bears' women's basketball team, Charlee will be a fixture at games, practices, and various team functions.
Since being matched with the women's basketball team last spring, Charlee has been able to be a part of the team through virtual meetings and was able to join the team at a practice in early September. Charlee's signing day is the second time she was able to be a part of the team in person.
"Charlee has been awesome and she is going to be a great part of the program," said senior Ashley Ducharme. "It has been really fun to hang out with her and we are definitely inspired by her story and just how fun of a person she is. We had a bunch of zoom calls but to get her in front of the team at practice and now today was really fun."
About Team IMPACT Team IMPACT is the only U.S. nonprofit that tackles the emotional trauma and social isolation experienced by children facing serious and chronic illnesses by matching them with a college athletic team. Our two-year therapeutic program complements a child's medical treatments, allowing the child to develop relationships and skills that help them complete the full circle of healing. Through participation in Team IMPACT's clinically informed program, children experience a true sense of belonging, resulting in increased empowerment, normalization, health promotion, and resilience. Families feel connected and supported as their child achieves individualized goals, while experiencing the joy of team camaraderie and inclusion; and student athletes gain perspective and inspiration, as well as lessons in adversity and resilience.
Founded in 2011, Team IMPACT has matched more than 2,200 children with 700+ colleges and universities in 49 states, impacting more than 60,000 student athletes.
Team IMPACT has more than 1,200 teams across the country waiting to be matched with children, ages 5-16, who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening or chronic illness and who could benefit from becoming a member of the team.
