PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling has selected seniors Nino Bastianelli and Hunter Kosco as well as junior AJ Pedro as captains for the 2020-21 season, Brown head coach Todd Beckerman announced on Monday.
Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) will act as a captain for the second straight year while Kosco (Canal Fulton, Ohio) and Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) will make their debut as team captains.
"I am really excited with the team's vote of captains for this upcoming season," Beckerman said. "These three leaders are driven, highly competitive, responsible, and passionate about what we are trying to accomplish as a program. Nino, Hunter, and AJ will all provide our team with tremendous leadership this season!"
Last season, Bastianelli represented the Bears at the EIWA Championships and gained the team's Rob Davidson Most Dedicated Wrestler Award and Ralph Anderton-Edward Durgin Award. An EIWA All-Academic Team honoree, he ranked second on the team in wins (18), first in dual wins (eight), first in technical falls (three), and first in dual points (33).
In 2018-19, Kosco placed eighth at the EIWA Championships, came in fifth at the Bearcat Open, and won the team's Don Van Heest Award, presented to the wrestler who fought back from adversity.
As a sophomore, Pedro represented the team at the EIWA Championships, earned EIWA All-Academic honors, and placed third at the Patriots Open. As a rookie, he gained the team's Artemis Joukowsky Award for Most Promising Freshman.
On the team level, the trio helped Brown place eighth at the 2019 EIWA Championships, marking the program's highest finish at the conference tournament since 2004. The group also aided the Bears to a second-place finish in the Ivy League standings in 2018, their highest finish since 1997.
