
Women’s Basketball Honors Class of 2020 on Senior Night against Dartmouth

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior guard McKenna Dale scored a career-high 28 points, and senior guard Justine Gaziano netted 10 points to finish her career with 1,818 points, but Brown University women's basketball dropped a 72-58 decision to Dartmouth College on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (8-19, 2-12 Ivy) cut a 19-point second half deficit down to five points twice inside the final five minutes – including at 63-58 with 3:55 to play – before the visiting Big Green (10-17, 4-10 Ivy) scored the game's final nine points – including 6-of-6 shooting on free throws – to hold on for the win.
"I'm proud that we were able to honor our seniors – Justine Gaziano and Haley Green – tonight," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "They are both wonderful people, and it's been my privilege to coach them for the last four years. We played hard tonight and rallied but couldn't quite come all the way back."
Dale (Storrs, Conn.) hit a career-high seven 3-pointers (7-of-13) as part of her 28-point effort, made 9-of-21 field goals overall, and grabbed nine rebounds. She netted over 20 points for the fifth time this year and scored in double figures for the 18th time. Dale averaged 17.0 points per game during conference play.
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) tallied 10 points and four assists in her 106th career game played and 102nd career start – tied for the fourth-most starts in team history. She finished her career with 1,818 career points, ranking second all-time at Brown and 10th all-time in Ivy League history.
In the Brown record books, Gaziano ranks third in career field goals (651), third in career 3-pointers (209), and fifth in career free throws (307), standing as the only student-athlete in program history to rank in the top five in all four major scoring categories. For her career, she scored in double figures 89 times, netted 20 or more points 39 times, and scored 30 or more points four times.
Senior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) – the only Brown student-athlete to play in all 57 games over the last two seasons – registered six rebounds, five points, two assists, and two steals.
Freshman forward Fiona Finn (West Roxbury, Mass.) contributed five points, six boards, three assists, and three steals, sophomore guard Maddie Mullin (Wellesley, Mass.) added six points and four rebounds, and junior guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) distributed a game-high six assists.
For Dartmouth, Paula Lenart posted a double-double on 13 points and 14 rebounds while Annie McKenna totaled 15 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Anna Luce netted 14 points, and Katie Douglas notched 11 points.
Each team hit double-digit 3-pointers in the game with the Bears making 11 and the Big Green connecting on 10. Dartmouth countered with advantages in free throws made (18-5), rebounds (43-33), second-chance points (13-5), and points off turnovers (19-13).
Baskets from Gaziano and Green and a 3-pointer from Mullin kept Brown within 11-7 early in the first quarter. After Dartmouth used a 12-2 run to pull ahead 23-9, a jumper from Finn and 3-pointer from Mullin allowed Brown to stay within 28-14. The Big Green led 31-14 at the end of the first quarter after hitting 10-14 field goals (71.4 percent) and 5-of-7 treys (71.4 percent).
The Bears answered with a 9-0 run to start the second quarter behind a pair of 3-pointers from Dale and a trey from Gaziano, making the score 31-23 with 7:33 left in the frame. Dale and Gaziano each connected on one more triple in the stanza, keeping the margin to 38-29 with 3:05 to go in the half. Dartmouth then took a 41-30 advantage into halftime.
In the second quarter, the Bears hit 5-of-8 3-pointers (62.5 percent) while limiting the Big Green to 18.8-percent shooting from the field (3-of-16). Each team made seven 3-pointers in the first half.
Dartmouth opened the second half on an 8-0 run to move ahead 49-30. The Bears countered with a 10-2 burst behind five points from Dale and baskets from Gaziano and Finn, bringing Brown back within 11 points, 51-40, with 3:04 to go in the third quarter. Another five points from Dale – including her second 3-pointer of the quarter – kept Brown within 57-45 heading to the final frame.
Dale scored nine of the Bears' first 11 points of the fourth quarter, alongside a layup from Green, as Brown used a 16-5 spurt to pull within 61-56 with 4:42 remaining. A jumper from Leonidas kept the margin at five points, 63-58, with 3:55 to play before Dartmouth scored the game's final nine points, including 6-of-6 shooting on free throws.
