Cabanillas Places to Lead Wrestling on Day One of EIWA Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman 149-pounder Ricky Cabanillas secured place-winner status with a pair of victories to lead Brown University wrestling at the 116^th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships on Friday at Lehigh University's Stabler Arena.

Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) – the No. 8 seed at 149 pounds – earned back-to-back victories in the consolation bracket to earn a spot in the top eight in his debut at the conference tournament. After dropping a 6-3 decision to No. 9 Lucas Revano of Penn, Cabanillas topped No. 16 Matt Swanson of Binghamton, 6-5, and No. 6 Matt Kolonia of Bucknell, 9-5, to advance to day two.

"It was great to see Ricky place and advance to day two in his first time competing at EIWAs," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We'll be looking forward to seeing how high he can place when we hit the mat again tomorrow."

Cabanillas – who has a team-high 24 wins on the year – will meet No. 7 seed PJ Ogunsanya of Army West Point in the consolation on Saturday. The top four finishers in the 149-pound bracket will gain automatic berths into the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore 157-pounder Jack Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.) earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a 7-2 win over No. 8 seed Cole Aaron of Franklin & Marshall in the round of 16 prior to dropping his next two matches.

Sophomore 184-pounder Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) – making his second appearance at EIWAs – earned a pair of wins on the day, topping John Stout of Penn, 5-2, in the round of 32 and Michael Doggett of Harvard, 6-1, in the consolation.

Senior 125-pounder Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.), junior 133-pounder Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), senior 141-pounder Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.), and junior 197-pounder Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) each tallied one win in consolation competition.

Faber and Pawelski both dropped narrow decisions in tie-breaker sessions in the round of 16. Keeley made his fourth career appearance at EIWAs while Pawelski took part in the tournament for the second time.

Cabanillas will have an opportunity to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships which will take place from March 19-21 at U.S. Bank Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The NCAA will announce the full field for the championships on Tuesday, March 10 and unveil the tournament's brackets with a selection show on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.

In the team standings, Brown ranks 14^th out of 17 schools with 10.5 points. No. 12 Lehigh leads the field with 87.5 points, Army West Point stands second with 73.5 points, and No. 21 Cornell sits third with 68.5 points.

The Bears return to the mat tomorrow – Saturday, March 7 – with Session III beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the championship finals starting at 2:30 p.m.
