Men’s Swimming & Diving Announces Award Winners for 2019-20 Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team handed out its team awards and celebrated the past season recently at program's annual banquet. The 2019-20 team broke a total of seven school records at the Ivy League Championships and had their best finish since 2002 by placing fourth with 976.50 points. Two divers also went on to compete at the NCAA Zone A Championships.
Team Awards
The Joseph Watmough Most Valuable Swimmer Award
Named to honor Joseph Watmough Brown Swimming Coach 1943-1972. This annual award given to a member of the men's swimming and diving team who has made outstanding contributions toward the team's effort throughout the entire season. Consistent high-level performances in pressure situations, in both dual meets and championship competition, should be taken into consideration. The coaching staff and swimmers vote to determine the recipient of this prestigious award.
Winner: Senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.)
- Set the 200 backstroke school record (finished third) and was a member of the 800 freestyle relay team that broke the school record at the Ivy League Championships
- Also competed in the 100 backstroke, 200 IM, 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay at Ivies
- Finishes his career a part of eight school records (three individual, five relays)
The Win Wilson '51 Service Award
This award is given to a member of the men's swimming and diving team who exemplifies unselfishness through commitment and hard work in the pool, in the community, and for the team.
Winner: Senior Toshiki Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan)
- Competed in all seven regular season meets
- Won the 200 breaststroke at Cornell and finished third in the 100 breaststroke
The Ken Miller '70 Scholar – Athlete Award
This award is given to a member of the men's swimming and diving team who, through dedication in the classroom and in the pool, exemplifies the true meaning of a scholar-athlete.
Winner: Junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.)
- Broke the 200 freestyle school record and was a member of the 800 freestyle relay team that also set a program record at the Ivy League Championships
- Also competed in the 500 freestyle, 1650 freestyle, 400 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay at Ivies
- Member of the 400 medley relay team that set a school record at the Big Al Open
The Thomas R. Temple '65 Coaches' Award
This annual award is presented to a member of the men's swimming and diving team who has demonstrated the qualities of dedication, personal self-improvement, and sportsmanship. There will always be student athletes at Brown who supplement their skill limitations with determination and hard work and thus earn the respect of their contemporaries. The coaching staff votes to determine the recipient of this prestigious award.
Winner: Junior Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.)
- Competed in the 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle and 200 butterfly at the Ivy League Championships
- Won the 200 freestyle against Columbia
Rookie of the Year Award
This award is given to the most outstanding first year swimmer or diver. Voted on by the coaches, this award is based on dual meet and championship performance, teamwork and leadership.
Winner: Freshman Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.)
- Set the 500 and 1000 freestyle school record at the Ivy League Championships
- Also competed in the 400 IM at Ivies
