KINGSTON, R.I. – The Brown men's and women's track & field teams racked up eight individual victories as the Bears competed at the URI Coaches Tribute Invitational Saturday at Mackal Fieldhouse.
Â
"We were looking to accomplish some specific things today, and we got most of them done," said head coach Tim Springfield. "We're continuing to put the pieces of our team together--it was great to see so many event wins and strong performances. We had a lot of athletes improve their positions as we head to the Ivy League championships."
Â
On the track, Derek Davey (Elkhorn, Wis.) won the 500 meters at 1:06.38 and Griffin McCauley (Stone Mountain, Ga.) topped the mile in a time of 4:17.75. Bretram Rogers (Grand Prairie, Texas) picked up another victory in the 60-meter hurdles as he crossed the finish line at 8.27.
Â
Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.) captured first place in the mile with a time of 459.51.
Â
Rookie Altan Mitchell (Ankara, Turkey) topped the men's long jump field with a leap of 23-2, while Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) won the event on the women's side at 19-2.
Â
Nigel Despinasse (Baton Rouge, La.) won the shot put with a toss of 51-5.5 and Michael Coppolino (Cumberland, R.I.) took first in the weight throw at 61-1.25.
Â
