Brown’s Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short, Bears Fall to Providence, 13-12, In Overtime

Providence, R.I. – Brown's furious fourth quarter comeback came up short when Sean Lahey scored for Providence in overtime to earn a 13-12 win over the Bears for the Ocean State Cup at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown dropped its second straight overtime game and falls to 2-2 overall, while Providence improves to 4-1 overall.
Brown trailed 10-5 heading into the fourth quarter and 12-9 with 5:03 remaining. The Bears scored three times in the final 2:27 on goals by junior George Grell (Short Hills, NJ), junior Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY) and senior Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD), who knotted the score, 12-12, with 33 seconds remaining.
Lahery's game-winning goal came on a man-up situation with 1:16 left in the first overtime.
Augravin and senior Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) scored three goals each for the Bears with Aughavin adding two assists.
McCaleb had two goals and two assists and sophomore Darian Cook (Redding, CT) had two goals for Brown.
Lehey and Providence teammate Matt Grillo had two goals each, while Dan Axelson added two goals for the Friars.
Brown senior goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) registered 12 saves, while Friars goalie Toby Burgdorf had 16 saves.
The Bears held a 3-2 lead on a goal by Kniffin with 11:18 left in the second quarter.
That's when Providence caught fire, outscoring the Bears 5-1 for the remainder of the quarter to grab a 7-4 lead at the half following a late goal by Leary.
Providence extended its lead to 10-4 midway through the third quarter after a Michael Hughes goal. Cook scored for the Bears at the 6:36 mark to trail, 10-5, after three quarters.
Brown made a run at the Friars to open the fourth quarter, with sophomore George Pike (Woodside, CA), Kniffin, McCaleb and Aughavin scoring for the Bears to trail, 11-9, with 9:33 left.
Brown will match-up against defending National Champion and sixth-ranked Virginia with former head coach Lars Tiffany on Sunday, March 8 at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Face-off is 12:00 noon on ESPN+ and NESNplus.
