
Women’s Basketball Falls at No. 21 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bears' freshman class combined for 26 points and 13 rebounds, but Brown University women's basketball fell to No. 21 Princeton University, 81-39, on Friday night at Jadwin Gymnasium.
The Tigers (23-1, 11-0 Ivy) earned at least a share of their third straight Ivy League title with the victory over the visiting Bears (8-16, 2-9 Ivy) as the hosts – ranked No. 21 in the Coaches Poll and No. 23 in the AP Poll – claimed the Ivy title for the eighth time in the last 11 seasons.
"Princeton is a really good basketball team that has earned its spot in the top 25," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We'll turn our attention to tomorrow's game against Penn."
Making her 99th career start, senior guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) scored seven points. She now has 1,766 career points, 630 career field goals, 199 career 3-pointers, and 307 career free throws.
Freshman guard Sydney Rosant (Foster City, Ga.) netted seven points with two rebounds and two steals while freshman forward Dani Short (Aliquippa. Pa.) scored a season-best six points to go with three rebounds. Sophomore forward Ashley Ducharme (Milton, Mass.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Freshman forward Fiona Finn (West Roxbury, Mass.) tallied five points, five rebounds, and two assists while junior guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and freshman guards Myla Cox (Petal, Miss.) and Lexi Love (Oakland, Calif.) each scored four points.
The Bears' five-member freshman class combined for 26 points on 11-of-23 field goals (47.8 percent) and 2-of-4 3-pointers (50.0 percent) alongside 13 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
For Princeton – which extended its win streak to 19 games and remained unbeaten in Ivy play – Bella Alarie totaled 18 points, six rebounds, and four blocks, and Julia Cunningham netted 14 points. Ellie Mitchell posted a double-double on 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Carlie Littlefield added 13 points.
After Princeton opened the game with a 14-0 lead, Brown countered with seven straight points to pull within 14-7 with 3:37 left in the first quarter. During the run, Gaziano scored five points – including a 3-pointer – and Finn added a layup after an offensive rebound. The Tigers led 21-7 at the end of one.
Two free throws from Short trimmed the margin to 21-9 early in the second quarter before the Tigers used a 14-0 run to move ahead 35-9 with 2:37 to play in the half. A free throw from Leonidas stopped the run, and a layup at the first half buzzer from Cox following a steal from Gaziano brought Brown within 37-12 at the break.
In the first half, Brown held Princeton to 38.2-percent shooting from the field (13-of-34) and 28.6-perent shooting from 3-point distance (4-of-14). The Tigers limited the Bears to 4-of-21 field goals (19.0 percent) and 1-of-10 3-pointers (10.0 percent).
A 3-point play from Leonidas and two free throws from Gaziano made the score 42-17 before the Tigers used a 9-0 run to pull ahead 51-17. The Bears then outscored Princeton 12-9 over the rest of the quarter as the hosts led 60-29 after three. During the 12-9 stretch, Rosant scored five points – including a 3-poiner – Finn made a trey, and Love and Cox each hit jump shots.
In the third quarter, the Bears hit 6-of-11 field goals (54.5 percent), 2-of-3 triples (66.7 percent), and 3-of-3 free throws.
In the fourth quarter, Short scored four points, and senior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.), Rosant, and Love each made a basket.
Next, Brown plays its final road game of the season at the University of Pennsylvania tomorrow – Saturday, Feb. 29 – at 6:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
