
Black History Month 2020: Marcus Thompson '89, Men's Basketball

Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Marcus Thompson '89, Men's Basketball
A member of the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame, Marcus Thompson '89 led Brown in scoring in three of his four years. A two-time All-Ivy performer, Thompson finished his career as Brown's third all-time scorer and still ranks ninth in the Bears' record book with 1,328 points. A senior captain for the Bears, he still stands sixth all-time at Brown in career field goals (498). As a freshman in 1985-86, Thompson helped Brown earn its first-ever Ivy League championship. In his junior season, Thompson led the Bears in scoring for the second straight year with 19.3 points per game, scoring in double figures in 24 of 26 games and reaching the 20-point mark on an impressive 13 occasions. Thompson again paced the Bears in scoring as a senior, netting 17.9 points per game and scoring in double figures 18 times. He captured Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors in 1987-88 and Second Team All-Ivy accolades in 1988-89. After graduating from Brown with a dual degree in Organizational Behavior and African American History, Thompson continued his basketball career in Europe, where he played in the Portuguese Professional League.
