PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated St. John's, 5-2, on Sunday at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears came back after falling in the doubles round and claimed wins in five of their six singles matches.
"I was glad to see how the team responded to yesterday's tough loss," said Lucie Schmidhauser. "We came out much more disciplined and with clarity about how each person needed to play. I was proud of Ryan Peus being able to clinch the match and embrace the challenge of being one of the last players on the court with the match on the line."
St. John's came out with a 6-1 win in third doubles and a 6-3 victory in the top position to take a 1-0 lead.
Brown opened singles with back-to-back victories to take a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) registered the first win in fourth singles (6-5) while freshman Britany Lau (Kinnelon, N.J.) followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win in the third spot. No. 51 Jessica Livianu would tie the match for the Red Storm, 2-2, with her victory in first singles but the Bears would respond by winning the last three matches. Senior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) gave Brown the lead for good (3-2) by winning her second singles match, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) (6-3, 6-1, fifth) and freshman Gabriella Dellacono (Stonington, Conn.) (6-1, 7-6 (5), sixth) closed out the day with wins.
The Bears next travel to UMass on Sunday, March 1 for a 2:00 p.m. match
