AMHERST, Mass. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated UMass, 5-2, on Sunday at Hampshire College. The Bears won the doubles point and took four of six singles matches for their second-straight win.
"The team competed well today," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Everyone is starting to have much better clarity of their game style; for some of our players it's a matter of working on more precise execution. The key is the willingness of each player to push themselves beyond their comfort level in practice and to challenge each other with purpose driven execution."
Brown got on the board first with the doubles point. After falling in first doubles, the Bears responded with two 6-2 wins. Senior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) and freshman Gabriella Dellacono (Stonington, Conn.) recorded the first victory of the day in the third position while junior Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and freshman Britany Lau (Kinnelon, N.J.) followed in the second spot.
The Bears built a 3-0 lead when Lau (6-3, 6-0, third) and sophomore Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) (6-2, 6-2, fourth) opened singles with back-to-back wins. UMass would pull within one (3-2) with wins in first and second singles before junior Peri Sheinin (East Greenwich, R.I.) (6-1, 6-2, sixth) and sophomore Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) (6-2, 6-3, fifth) closed out the day with wins.
The Bears next host Stony Brook on Saturday, March 14 at 11:00 a.m.
