PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team was defeated by Boston University, 5-2, on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears pulled within one (3-2) in the singles round but the Terriers recorded wins in fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to hold on for the victory.
"Today's match against BU was a battle," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "There were many momentum swings in the match where it looked like the match could go either way. In the end, BU was just mentally tougher and more disciplined with their play. There were definitely some highlights in today's match on our side, such as Devon Jack really stepping up in singles and dominating her opponent after losing the first set and showing resilience in tough situations. I believe this group will bounce back tomorrow against St. John's."
The first two doubles matches were decided by the score of 6-2 with junior Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and freshman Britany Lau (Kinnelon, N.J.) knotting the round with their win in the second spot. Boston University clinched the point by outlasting the Bears in the third match, 6-4.
BU went up 2-0 with a win in fourth singles. Despite Kowalsky winning her first set 6-3 in first singles, No. 116 Erica Di Battista came back to win the match with scores of 6-2 and 6-1 for a 3-0 BU advantage. The Bears cut the deficit when Lau posted a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win in the third spot while senior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) followed with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 showing in second singles. The Terriers, however, would hold on for the win by edging the Bears in fifth (7-5, 6-4) and sixth singles (3-6, 7-5, 6-2).
Brown next hosts St. John's tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 23, at 3:00 p.m.
