
Women’s Swimming & Diving Breaks Two School Records on Day Three of the Ivy League Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team broke two school records on day three of the Ivy League Championships on Friday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was the first to break a program mark, doing so in the 100 butterfly while junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) broke her own school record later in the night in the 100 backstroke.
Brown remains in fifth place with 587 points while Princeton moved up to the top spot with 1,020 points. Harvard (964) and Yale (745.5) sit in second and third, respectively.
The 1000 freestyle opened the night's finals where sophomore Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) took 14th in 10:03.13 while senior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) came in 18th (10:13.21).
Whall next placed seventh in the A-Final of the 400 IM in 4:22.23. In the B-Final of the event, the Bears went 2-3 with sophomore Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) taking second in 4:20.11 with senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) behind her (4:21.21). Armitage concluded the event in the C-Final by finishing fifth (4:27.63).
Matsushima broke the program record in the 100 butterfly and finished third in the A-Final with an NCAA B-Cut time of 53.22, besting the 53.38 mark set by teammate Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass,). Freshman Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) finished fourth in the B-Final of the event (54.18) while junior Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) came in fifth in the C-Final (55.43).
Freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) led Brown in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.87, good for fourth place in the B-Final. Senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) also placed in the final in sixth (1:50.17) while senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) turned in a third-place finish in the C-Final (1:50.42).
The 100 breaststroke saw sophomore Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) take third in the B-Final in 1:03.12. Freshman Sasha Liu (Piedmont, Calif.) came in sixth of the C-Final in 1:04.20 while sophomore Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) followed in eighth (1:04.86).
Seaman finished second in the A-Final of the 100 backstroke while breaking her own school record of 54.39 with a time of 53.82, an NCAA B-Cut time. Her finish also earned her Second Team All-Ivy honors. Matsushima won the B-Final of the event in 55.07 with Welch coming in sixth (55.79). Sophomore Allyson Ty (North Andover, Mass.) (55.66, first) and sophomore Victoria Gong (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) (56.93, sixth) competed in the C-Final.
The 400 medley relay team of Seaman, Lukawski, Matsushima and Cross concluded the night with a time of 3:41.53 for fifth place.
The Bears will wrap up the Ivy League Championship tomorrow (Feb. 22) with prelims starting at 11:00 a.m. and finals for the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
