
Women’s Basketball Drops 76-66 Decision to Columbia

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior guard McKenna Dale scored 16 points, and senior guard Justine Gaziano and freshman guard Sydney Rosant netted 15 and 13 points respectively, but Brown University women's basketball dropped a 76-66 decision to Columbia University on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (7-15, 1-8 Ivy) remained within 57-52 with 9:11 to play before the Lions (14-8, 5-4 Ivy) used a 7-0 run to take a 64-52 lead with 6:42 left and did not allow the hosts to pull closer than nine points the rest of the way.
"We played hard tonight but couldn't quite cut into their lead down the stretch," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We were able to turn a 14-point game into a five-point game, but give credit to Columbia for pulling out the win. We can build off this for tomorrow's game against Cornell."
Dale (Storrs, Conn.) filled the stat sheet with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting alongside seven rebounds, three blocks, three steals, and two assists. She scored in double figures for the 12th time in her last 13 games.
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) netted her 15 points on 6-of-13 field goals to go with four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. She scored in double figures for the 17th time this year and 85th time in her career. She now has 1,731 career points, 618 career field goals, 192 career 3-pointers, and 303 career free throws.
Rosant (Foster City, Ga.) tallied a career-best 13 points on 5-of-11 field goals and 3-of-6 treys. She scored in double figures for the third time this year with all three games coming in Ivy League play.
Junior guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) compiled eight points and a team-high six assists, sophomore guard Maddie Mullin (Wellesley, Mass.) notched eight points, two 3-pointers, and five rebounds, and sophomore forward Ashley Ducharme (Milton, Mass.) added a team-best eight rebounds, four points, two blocks, and two assists.
For Columbia, Kaitlyn Davis posted a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds alongside four assists, four steals, and four blocks. Sienna Durr scored a game-high 17 points, and Abbey Hsu netted 13 points. Janiya Clemmons and Mikayla Markham rounded out the Lions' double-figure scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively. Carly Rivera distributed a game-high seven assists.
For the game, Columbia hit 8-of-16 3-pointers and held a 40-26 edge in points in the paint.
The Bears opened the contest with a 12-4 lead as Gaziano scored four points and Mullin and Dale each hit 3-pointers. After Columbia took a 14-12 lead, Rosant notched five points, including a trey, and Gaziano hit a layup as the Bears remained within 20-19 at the end of one.
A basket from senior Haley Green (Salem, Va.) and another five points from Rosant, including her second trey of the game, pushed Brown ahead 26-23 with 8:52 to go in the second quarter. The Lions went ahead 35-28 at the 4:55 mark with a 12-2 run before baskets from Leonidas and Dale kept the Bears within 39-32 at the half.
In the third quarter, Brown stayed within 45-38 behind baskets from Dale, Leonidas, and Ducharme before Columbia scored seven straight points to take a 52-38 edge with 6:03 to go in the frame. The Bears countered with a 12-3 run, including five points from Dale, four points from Gaziano, and a trey from Mullin, cutting the margin to 55-50. The visitors remained ahead 57-50 heading to the fourth quarter.
A jumper from Leonidas made the score 57-52 with 9:11 remaining before the Lions used a 7-0 spurt to pull ahead 64-52 with 6:42 left. Triples from Rosant and Gaziano helped Brown slice the deficit to 75-66 with 36 seconds left before Columbia held on for the win.
As part of Faculty Appreciation Day, the Bears recognized several members of the Brown University faculty prior to tip-off.
Next, Brown hosts Cornell tomorrow – Saturday, Feb. 22 – at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
