
Wrestling Completes New York Swing with Win at LIU, Setback at Hofstra

BROOKVILLE and HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Senior Jimmy Pawelski and freshman Ricky Cabanillas each won twice on the day as Brown University wrestling topped Long Island University, 30-12, and fell to Hofstra University, 29-6, on Sunday at the Pratt Recreation Center and Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex respectively.

In a pair of EIWA duals, the Bears (2-9, 2-8 EIWA) won seven bouts in their victory over the Sharks (2-19, 0-7 EIWA) before dropping the decision to the Pride (10-5, 6-0 EIWA), who remained undefeated in EIWA duals and extended its win streak to seven matches.

"It was good to start the day with a win over LIU and to have multiple guys earn bonus-point wins," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "Jimmy and Ricky both wrestled well to each go 3-0 on the weekend. We're looking forward to one more weekend of duals before making our final preparations for EIWAs."

Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) and Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) both went 3-0 on the weekend, increasing their season win totals to 20 and 13 wins respectively. Cabanillas – who leads the team with his 20 wins – Pawelski, and senior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) all tallied technical falls against LIU.

Next, Brown hosts Harvard on Feb. 22 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+) and wrestles at Sacred Heart on Feb. 23 at 4:30 p.m. before competing at the EIWA Championships from March 6-7.

The Bears won the dual's first five bouts, gaining a 24-0 lead on their way to the victory over the host Sharks – a program in its first season as a member of the EIWA.

Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) tallied his team-high 19th win of the season and first technical fall of the year. Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) notched his 12th win of the year and first technical fall while Keeley (Washington, Ill.) registered his 10th win of 2019-20 and second technical fall.

Sophomore Jack Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.) earned his 16th win of the year, and junior Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) gained his 15th victory of the season. Sophomore Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) added a win, and junior Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) tacked on a forfeit win for his 12th victory of the season.

Keeley opened the dual with a 16-1 technical fall over Brandon Mercado at 125 pounds. Keeley held an 8-1 lead at the end of the first period and 12-1 margin at the end of the second stanza en route to the win.

After a forfeit win for Faber at 133 pounds, Pawelski recorded an 18-3 technical fall over Michael Blando at 141 pounds, giving Brown a 16-0 edge in the team score. Pawelski led 12-3 after one period and 16-3 at the end of two on his way to his second win of the weekend.

Cabanillas followed with the Bears' third technical fall in as many contested bouts, besting Adam Barker 17-2 at 149 pounds. Cabanillas went up 8-0 at the close of the first period and 11-0 after two frames, helping secure his second win of the season and extending Brown's team lead to 21-0.

Bokina capped a streak of five straight bout victories with a 4-0 win over Dominick Demarco at 157 pounds, making the team score 24-0. After two scoreless periods, Bokina compiled all of his points in the third frame and maintained the shutout.

Following a forfeit for Brown at 165 pounds, Wilson notched a 6-3 win over James Langan at 174 pounds for the Bears' fifth straight win in contested bouts. With the score tied 2-2 entering the third period, Wilson outscored Langan 4-1 in the final frame.

Bastianelli notched Brown's final win of the dual, topping Mark Malico, 5-2, at 197 pounds. Bastianelli held a 4-0 lead at the end of two periods and did not allow Malico to make a comeback in the final stanza.

At 141 pounds, Pawelski scored a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second stanza to pull ahead 4-1 on Hofstra's Vinny Vespa. After Vespa earned a reversal in the third period to pull within 4-3, Pawelski responded with an escape to take the bout, 5-3.

Cabanillas followed with an 11-9 decision over Reece Heller at 149 pounds. The two stood tied 4-4 after one period before Heller pulled ahead 7-5 through two stanzas. Cabanillas then scored a reversal and two takedowns in the final frame to emerge with the victory.

Three other Bears came within a takedown in setbacks. Sophomore Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) dropped an 8-7 decision to Sage Heller at 174 pounds, junior Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) came within 3-1 of Trey Rogers at 197 pounds, and junior Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) fell in sudden victory, 7-5, to Justin Hoyle at 133 pounds.
