NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Jimmy Pawelski and freshman Ricky Cabanillas both earned wins, but Brown University wrestling dropped a 29-6 decision at Columbia University on Saturday afternoon at University Gymnasium.
Â
In an Ivy League and EIWA dual meet, the Bears (1-8, 1-7 EIWA, 0-4 Ivy) pulled within 9-6 through four bouts before the host Lions (7-4, 7-3 EIWA, 2-2 Ivy) took the match's final six bouts.
Â
Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) tallied his team-high 18th win of the season while Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) posted his 11th victory of the year.
Â
"We have a quick turnaround with two duals tomorrow so we'll learn from this and get ready for LIU and Hofstra," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said.
Â
Entering the third period trailing 1-0 at 141 pounds, Pawelski notched an escape to tie the score at 1-1 and topped the Lions' Matt Kazimir, 2-1, with a point for riding time, bringing Brown within 9-3 in the team score.
Â
At 149 pounds, Cabanillas captured a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period, extended his margin to 6-1 at the close of the second stanza, and completed the win with a 9-2 decision over Andy Carr, trimming the Bears' deficit to 9-6.
Â
Two other Bears came within a takedown in setbacks as sophomore Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) dropped a 4-2 decision to Lennox Wolak at 174 pounds, and sophomore Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) came within 4-3 of Joe Franzese at 184 pounds.
Â
Next, Brown competes in a pair of EIWA duals tomorrow – Sunday, Feb. 16 – against Long Island University (11:00 a.m.) and Hofstra University (1:30 p.m.).
