PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated Rutgers, 4-3, on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears took the doubles point and held on for the win in singles, clinching the match in the third spot.
"Our team's focus has been to improve one-percent every day, strategically, emotionally and physically," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "This ability to focus on the process of getting better is starting to show in our performances. We came out very strong in doubles and were able to carry that momentum throughout the match, even though some difficult situations that would have given us trouble in the past."
Sophomore Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) opened the day with a 6-1 win in second doubles while freshman Britany Lau (Kinnelon, N.J.) and freshman Gabriella Dellacono (Stonington, Conn.) followed in the third position with a 6-2 victory to gain the 1-0 advantage.
Rutgers evened up the contest by winning fourth singles to begin the next round. Newman next pulled Brown ahead, 2-1, with a 6-2, 6-4 win in fifth singles. Senior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) (6-3, 6-4, second) and Lau (7-6 (5), 6-2, third) then put together consecutive victories to put the match out of reach with four points.
The Bears next compete at the ECAC Championships, Friday, Feb. 7 through Sunday, Feb. 9, at Columbia.
