HANOVER, N.H. – The Brown women's tennis team was defeated by Dartmouth, 6-1, on Sunday at the Dartmouth Invite. The Bears battled from start to finish, pushing multiple matches to tiebreak.
"Today's match was a big step forward in terms of our competitive engagement," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Every single player was committed to her performance goals and even though we didn't always execute perfectly, I'm glad the players are so committed to their improvement."
The Big Green opened the doubles round with a 6-1 win in the third spot and grinded out the point by taking first doubles, 6-3. Sophomore Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) battled in the final match (second doubles) but were edged, 7-6 (7-2).
Dartmouth built its lead to 3-0 with victories in sixth and second singles. Newman (7-5, 6-3) and Peus (6-4, 7-5) played tough in fifth and fourth singles, respectively, but were defeated in their matches. Freshman Britany Lau (Kinnelon, N.J.) put the Bears on the board with her 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) (10-8) victory in third singles. Junior Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) won her first set in the top spot but Nicole Conard would take the match following with 6-3 and 7-5 wins.
The Bears next host Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 12:00 p.m.
