
Women’s Basketball Falls to Yale in Ivy Home Opener, 73-40

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior guard Justine Gaziano scored a team-high 15 points, but Brown University women's basketball fell to Yale University, 73-40, in its Ivy League home opener on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Playing at home for the first time since December 1, the Bears (6-9, 0-2 Ivy) remained within 26-18 with 2:57 to go in the second quarter before the visiting Bulldogs (12-3, 2-0 Ivy) – ranked No. 17 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll – used a 26-2 run spanning the second and third frames to pull ahead 52-20 with 5:36 left in the third.
"Give credit to Yale – they played very well," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We have to put this one behind us and have a good week of practice to get ready for Cornell and Columbia next weekend."
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) netted her 15 points on 5-of-11 field goals and 3-of-7 3-pointers, while adding three rebounds. She scored in double figures for the 11th time this year and 79th time in her career and now has 1,618 career points.
Freshman Fiona Finn (West Roxbury, Mass.) totaled eight points, nine rebounds, and three blocks – all career highs, while connecting on 4-of-8 field goals.
Sophomore forward Ashley Ducharme (Milton, Mass.) chipped in five points and four boards, junior guard McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.) added four points and five boards, and junior guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) tacked on four points, three assists, and three boards.
For Yale, Roxy Barahman scored a game-high 16 points, and Megan Gorman posted a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tori Andrew and Alex Cade each netted 11 points, and Camila Emsbo notched 10 points. For the game, the Bulldogs led in rebounds (49-34) and points in the paint (40-20).
Gaziano netted five points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer, but the Bears fell behind 19-5 at the end of the opening stanza.
After Yale moved ahead 26-7 with 7:32 to go in the second quarter, Brown responded with an 11-0 run, pulling within 26-18 with 2:57 left in the frame. Gaziano started the burst with a 3-pointer before Leonidas scored four points. Gaziano and Ducharme capped the run with a layup apiece. Yale then used a 10-0 run to close the half and lead 36-18 at the break.
In the first half, Yale held edges in points in the paint (22-10) and rebounds (25-18), while limiting Brown to 7-of-29 field goals (24.1 percent).
The Bulldogs scored the first eight and 16 of the first 18 points of the second half, moving ahead 52-20 with 5:36 to go in the third quarter. A 3-pointer from Gaziano stopped the run. Four points from Finn and a corner 3-pointer from Ducharme made the score 58-30 with 2:11 left in the third. Yale led 60-40 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Finn scored four points, freshman guard Sydney Rosant (Foster City, Ga.) hit a jump shot, and Gaziano and senior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) each made two free throws.
Next, Brown competes in its first back-to-back Ivy weekend of the year with road games at Cornell on Friday, Jan. 31 at 6:00 p.m. (ESPN+) and at Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+/SNY).
