Field Hockey Opens Season with Three Games in Four Days

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown field hockey team will begin its 2019 campaign with three games in four days, with two of the contests coming on home turf at Goldberger Family Field. First, the Bears open the weekend against of pair of in-state rivals. Brown hosts Bryant on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 4:00 p.m. The following day, Sunday, Sept. 8, the Bears will travel across town to face Providence at 4:00 p.m. Brown closes out the stretch on Tuesday, Sept. 10, welcoming No. 12 Stanford at 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Tuesday's home games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

KEY RETURNERS
The Bears return All-Ivy honorees Danielle van Rootselaar and Ali Dunning as well as leading goal scorer Gina Openshaw in 2019. Van Rootselaar ranked second on the team in points (16) with five goals and six assists, in gaining First Team All-Ivy laurels as a freshman. Her six assists were tied for seventh in the conference. Dunning, who earned Honorable Mention accolades, had the third-highest point total on the team with eight points on three goals and two assists. Two of her goals came off of penalty strokes. Senior Hannah Leckey anchors the defensive unit and is the program's all-time leader in defensive saves with 10 in her career. In addition, Leckey contributed two goals and four assists a year ago.

SCOUTING BRYANT
The Bulldogs, who finished last year 3-15, opened their season last Friday with a 1-0 loss at Lock Haven. Bryant's leading goal scorer Ally Burdick returns after netting three goals last season. Also returning for the Bulldogs is goalkeeper Marijn Jaarsma, who was among the top 10 in the country for both save percentage (.770) and saves per game (7.47). Prior to Saturday's game, Bryant will play at Providence on Friday.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars are 1-1 in 2019, defeating No. 24 Maine, 5-4, in overtime on Sept. 1 and falling to No. 13 Boston College on Aug. 30. Providence went an overall 11-8 in 2018. The Friars return their top-five scorers from a season ago and eight of their top-nine scoring threats overall. Allyson Parker is the squad's leading returning scorer, having tallied 17 points on six goals and five assists. Four of her six goals were game winners. Izzy Mendez led Providence in goals (seven), while Maddie Babineau paced the Friars with six assists. Lydia Rice returns the cage after spending the 2018 season as the team's full-time starter. She posted a 1.66 goals against average, a .754 save percentage and five shut-out victories.

SCOUTING STANFORD
Stanford is 1-2 this season, opening the season ranked No. 12 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Poll. The Cardinals began the year with a difficult schedule, falling to No. 15 Northwester, 4-3 (SO, Aug. 30), and No. 4 UConn, 3-2 (Sept. 1), before defeating Quinnipiac, 4-1, on Tuesday. Before making the trip to the East Coast, Stanford will play host to No. 7 Michigan on Friday. The Cardinals finished 14-6 last year, falling in the America East Semifinals. Stanford returns America East Offensive Player of the Year Corinne Zanolli, Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Kelsey Bing and Rookie of the Year Molly Redgrove.

LAST TIME VS. BRYANT
Brown opened the 2018 season against Bryant and scored a 3-1 victory at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears overcame an early first-half deficit and took a 2-1 advantage into the break. Rachel Lanouette '19 had a hand in two of Brown's three scores while Ellie Seid '19 netted what proved to be the game winner at 18:03 of the first. Brown is 6-4 overall against the Bulldogs, winning four out of the last five match-ups. Bryant last won in 2017, a 4-3 decision.

LAST TIME VS. PROVIDENCE
Providence won last year's battle, 1-0, at Goldberger Family Field with a late second half goal (66:50). The Friars have won four straight and hold the all-time series advantage at 25-10-2. Brown last took home a victory in 2014 at Goldberger Family Field (2-0).

LAST TIME VS. STANFORD
Brown is 0-1 all-time against Stanford, having played the Cardinals just once in the 1997 season, a 1-0 loss in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

INCOMING!
The Bears welcome six freshmen and one transfer to the 2019 roster. The rookies includeJodie Brine, Calista Manuzza, Chloe Perel, Ana Claire Piacentini, Lindsey Ross and Emma Rothkopf. Bea Bennett also joins the roster for her sophomore season after spending the 2018 campaign at Syracuse.
