PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team opened the 2019 season with a 3-0 win over Bryant on Saturday at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears did all of their scoring in the first two quarters, with senior Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) netting two goals while freshman Emma Rothkopf (Wilton, Conn.) scored her first collegiate points with the second goal of the game and an assist on the final tally. Senior Allee Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) recorded the clean sheet in her first career start.Â
"I was very pleased with our attacking play today," said head coach Jill Reeve. "The team connected well and created several scoring opportunities. It was a solid team win."
The Bears got things going early in the contest when Openshaw scored at 6:48. Sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) drove the endline and passed it to a cutting Openshaw far side. Brown (1-0) soon doubled its lead at 10:38 with a score from Rothkopf after she collected a loose ball and fired it home for a 2-0 lead.Â
Ayles closed the first quarter with three solid saves, all on penalty corners, and wouldn't be tested the rest of the game as the Bears dominated possession.Â
Openshaw added her second goal at 23:51 when Rothkopf found her driving towards net. Brown concluded two quarters of play with a 3-0 lead while outshooting Bryant (0-3) 12-4.Â
The final two quarters were quiet for both teams, as the Bears held a 5-2 shot advantage and took the only penalty corners (4). After Marjin Jaarsma made a total of two saves in the first two quarters for the Bulldogs, Lyndsay Swanston closed the game with four stops.Â
Overall, the Bears outshot the Bulldogs 17-6 and had a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. Aisling Madden generated three shots for Bryant while Isa Oldeskamp made a defensive save in the third.Â
With her two scores today, Openshaw moves up to 16th all-time at Brown with 17 career goals, passing Kerri Whitaker '96 who had 16.Â
Brown will travel across town tomorrow, Sept. 8, to play Providence in a 4:00 p.m. contest.Â
