
Volleyball Pushes Yale in Set Three Before Falling in Ivy Opener, 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Sophia Miller and senior Makena Ehlert posted 15 and 10 kills respectively, and the Bears forced extra points in set three before Brown University volleyball fell at Yale University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 26-24), on Saturday evening at Lee Amphitheater in both teams' Ivy League opener.

The Bears (8-3, 0-1 Ivy) nearly forced a fourth set behind a 6-0 run in set three before the host Bulldogs (5-5, 1-0 Ivy) – the reigning Ivy League champions – hung on to take the match in straight sets and earn their 14th consecutive home victory.

"Yale is one of the top teams in our conference and the defending Ivy champions for a reason," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "I was proud of the way we fought back in the third set. We're looking forward to getting back in our home gym to host our first Ivy home matches next weekend."

Miller (Dallas, Texas) led all players with her 15 kills and added six digs. Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) finished with 10 kills and nine digs, posting double-figure digs for the 11th time in 11 matches on the year. Junior Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) tacked on five kills, six digs, and two blocks.

Sophomore Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) notched her fourth double-double of the season behind 17 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Kaitlyn Wong (Los Altos, Calif.) contributed 11 digs for her fifth straight match with double-figure digs.

Senior Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied her 300th career block in the match, becoming the fourth student-athlete in program history with 300 or more career blocks.

The Bears and Bulldogs remained tied at 16-16 in set one before Yale used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 20-16. The visitors trimmed the margin to 21-18 before the hosts closed the set with four straight points for a 25-18 set win. Ehlert landed five kills on .556 hitting in the frame.

Yale increased its set lead to 2-0 behind a 25-11 win in set two. The Bulldogs took leads of 10-3, 15-6, and 20-9 on their way to the win.

In set three, Miller tallied nine kills on .500 hitting as the Bears forced overtime before falling 26-24 in the final frame. Trailing 21-15, Brown rattled off six consecutive points to tie the score at 21-21. The visitors again equalized at 22, 23, and 24 before the hosts claimed the contest's final two points. The Bears came up with 27 digs as a team in the stanza behind eight digs from Wong and seven digs from Sellers.

For Yale, Ellis DeJardin posted 13 kills, Frances Arnautou dished out a match-high 31 assists, and Yurika Boyd came up with a match-best 15 digs.

Next, Brown plays its first two Ivy League home matches of the season when the Bears host Dartmouth on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+) and Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
