PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Sophia Miller posted a double-double on 15 kills and 13 digs, and junior Gabrielle Moriconi tallied 10 kills as Brown University volleyball defeated Dartmouth College, 3-1 (13-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-18), on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center in its Ivy League home opener.
Â
After dropping the first frame, the Bears (9-3, 1-1 Ivy) captured the next three sets, taking each stanza with a margin of at least seven points over the visiting Big Green (5-6, 1-1 Ivy).
Â
"We did a good job defensively tonight," Brown head coach Ahen Kim said. "We made 73 digs in four sets. As we got comfortable playing defense, we were able to give ourselves opportunities for swings. It took a moment for us to find ourselves defensively, but once we were able to dig some balls, we were able to create scoring opportunities."
Â
Miller (Dallas, Texas) notched her second double-double of the season behind her match-high 15 kills on .361 hitting and 13 digs while Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) came off the Bears' bench and tallied double-figure kills for the seventh time this season with her 10 kills on .333 hitting.
Â
"Sophia had to persevere through some injuries initially and had a good match against Yale," Kim said. "My challenge to her and our outsides was to sustain that. Gabrielle did a great job coming in. Whatever combination of outsides we used, we were able to protect the efficiency in that position. That will be an important thing for us to do moving forward."
Â
Defensively, freshman libero Kaitlyn Wong (Los Altos, Calif.) contributed a match and career-high 26 digs alongside four service aces. She posted double-figure digs for the sixth straight match.
Â
Senior Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) registered six blocks, giving her 306 career blocks and vaulting her into third place on the Bears' all-time blocks list. She passed Payton Smith '17 (301 career blocks) on the list.
Â
At the setter spot, sophomore Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) recorded her fifth double-double in her last six matches with a match-best 22 assists and 15 digs. Junior Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) dished out 21 assists.
Â
Sophomore Olivia Dukat (Roswell, Ga.) totaled eight kills (.353 hitting) and five blocks, freshman Audra Curtin (Tampa, Fla.) added eight kills and five blocks, and junior Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) tacked on seven kills. Senior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) compiled four kills, five digs, five assists, and three aces.
Â
Following a 25-13 setback in set one, the Bears began their rally with a 25-14 victory in set two. Maintaining a 17-14 edge, Brown closed the frame on an 8-0 run. In the frame, Miller landed four kills on .571 hitting while Curtin tallied three kills on .750 hitting and three blocks.

After Dartmouth came within 17-15, the Bears concluded the frame on an 8-2 run, including four kills from Miller. Miller terminated on six kills on .545 hitting in the frame while Wong and Sellers contributed nine and seven digs respectively.
Â
In set four, Brown jumped out to leads of 10-5 and 19-9 en route to a 25-18 win to finish the match. Miller and Moriconi each posted five kills in the frame while Miller and Wong each tallied five digs.
