PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team concluded competition at the Brown Invitational on Sunday. The three-day tournament had three draws and included players from Dartmouth, Stony Brook, UMass and URI.

"This weekend was a great opportunity for our players to get back into competition after the summer break," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "These early fall events really show which players put the work in during the summer months. Overall, I was happy with our players' coachability and emotional control during matches. The team will continue to build on the lessons they learned this weekend and I look forward to improved play next weekend at the Harvard Classic. This team is showing very positive signs of cohesiveness and they are truly excited to work hard, support each other as well as challenge each other in practice-a great recipe for a productive year and the culture of accountability we are building."

Draw One
Both Bear squads won their doubles match on Friday, with a freshman Britany Lau (Kinnelon, N.J.) and junior Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) teaming up for a 6-1 victory over URI while sophomores Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) recorded a 6-4 win against Dartmouth. Lau then went the distance in her singles match, coming from behind, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Kowalsky also went three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 in picking up her win.

Day two saw the team of Lau and Kowalsky post another doubles victory (6-4, vs. UMass) but both fell in singles play. Newman came from behind for the victory in her singles match, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

On Sunday, Lau and Kowalsky won their third consecutive doubles match, this one against UMass by a score of 7-5. Peus and Newman closed the day winning all three matches versus URI. The duo posted a 6-2 doubles win while Peus took her singles match, 6-4, 2-1 (ret.), while Newman claimed her match, 6-4, 6-2.

Draw Two
Senior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.), junior Peri Sheinin (East Greenwich, R.I.) and sophomore Sophia Reddy (Eden Prairie, Minn.) competed in Draw Two for the Bears. Jack posted the lone win in day one, a 7-5, 6-3 victory in singles against UMass.

The trio swept their matches on Saturday, with Sheinin (7-5, 6-2) and Reddy (6-1, 6-4) picking up the singles wins versus the Rams while a team of Sheinin and Jack won doubles with a score of 6-3.

On Sunday, Reddy won her singles match against URI, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-6, and paired up with Jack for a 6-2 doubles win.

The Bears next compete at the Harvard Fall Classic, running Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22.
