Providence, R.I. – TJ Sorrentine, a member of the Brown men's basketball coaching staff for the last 12 years and a native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, will have his uniform No. 11 retired by the University of Vermont on Saturday, October 26 as the Catamounts host Brown University in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Sorrentine's teammate, Taylor Coppenrath, will also have his No. 22 jersey retired.
"I am truly humbled to receive such an honor," said Sorrentine. "My time at Vermont spent with my teammates, coaches, and the community were some of the best years of my life. I cannot wait to get back to Patrick Gymnasium on Tom Brennan Court to celebrate all of those special times once again!"
Sorrentine and Coppenrath, both 2005 University of Vermont graduates, helped Vermont earn its first-ever NCAA Tournament win over No. 4 seed Syracuse in the 2005 NCAA Tournament and were inducted into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame a decade later.
"The game itself against Vermont will be such a great experience for our team," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We'll get a true road game against a pre-season borderline top 25 team. But obviously this goes so far beyond that. TJ has meant so much to Brown Basketball, and for all of our program to be present while he gets this rightly honored is something I'm really excited about. This is a great way for us to start the season."
Sorrentine, the associate head coach at Brown, was an America East Rookie of the Year, America East Player of the Year, and a three-time America East All-Conference First Team performer. He ranks third among the all-time leading scorers at UVM with 2,013 points and graduated second with 548 assists and third with 164 steals.
Sorrentine established a new school and conference career record with 354 three-pointers to rank 11th all-time in NCAA history. He finished fourth in the country as a senior with an average of 3.7 three-pointers per game and set a Vermont and America East single-season record with 116 triples. He hit a key three-pointer in overtime to help seal the historic win over Syracuse. The Catamounts posted a 51-9 record against America East schools during his last three seasons as the starting point guard.
Sorrentine, who attended nearby St. Raphael's Academy in Pawtucket, joined the Brown coaching staff in 2008, the last seven years with coach Martin. He is well respected as a national recruiter and is recognized as one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the country. Sorrentine was the Interim Head Coach of the Bears from March 5, 2012 - June 1, 2012.
