Maddie McCarthy
Hometown: Barrington, R.I.
High School: Northwood and Deerfield
Why Brown?: "To me, Brown has always been a big presence in my life while growing up in Rhode Island. Brown's open curriculum, reputation, research and public service opportunities, and ski program became increasingly attractive as my vast range of academic and extracurricular interests and love for skiing grew with age. The opportunity to come back home to Brown to continue my education and ski career after spending several years away to be closer to mountains feels like a dream come true."
McCarthy Facts: Appeared in South American Cup Races … Made three Eastern Championship appearances … National Sports Academy MVP … Received the Loon Race Team Coach's Award … Led Deerfield to 2019 NEPSAC Championship … Named to the NEPSAC All-Conference Team … Member of the Northwood School Cum Laude Society … Received the Northwood School Headmaster's Prize and Science Prize.
Kat Stephan
Hometown: Charlestown, Mass.
High School: Milton Academy
Why Brown?: "Because of Brown's open curriculum. Rather than forcing students to prioritize one subject or to fulfill a core, Brown understands that fields are interconnected. Here, students can be themselves, explore their interests, and contribute meaningfully. At Brown, I can learn alongside students who love learning how to learn, embrace creativity, and take risks. Brown's curriculum is a refreshing reminder to stay strong in the battle against perfectionism. So Brown is where I had to be.
Stephan Facts: Two-year ISL Division All-Star … Named All-ISL and All-NEPSAC as a senior captain … Also competed in field hockey … Selected for Eastern Districts (2017) … Senior editor of the school newspaper … Head of the music section in art publication … Plays the piano and trumpet … Founder of The VIBE Program (a music non-profit).
Ariana Turner
